Coaching FAQ’s

When I first heard of coaching I was slightly doubtful about the impact if could have. Could it really change my life? What exactly is the role of a coach? I also realised that lots of my previous beliefs were incorrect. Check out these FAQ’s to answer any of your doubts about academic life coaching.

What happens during a coaching session? And how does it actually work?
A powerful coaching session is an awesome experience and each 45-60-minute session has a consistent feel, whilst the agenda will change from week to week.

Your son or daughter is encouraged to come to the session with an agenda of not only what they want to discuss but also what you would and they would like to take away from the coaching session. Usually this will be based on what is currently happening at school/university, at home or any significant issue that is coming up for them during that month or week.

The session will be shaped around that agenda and we will use many significant coaching tools and exercises to give your son or daughter a breakthrough moment. As the coach, I am like their team mate, guiding them to reach the solutions and answers they need. This is accomplished through deep attentive listening, powerful questions that remove your limiting assumptions. Our 10-week breakthrough package is broken down into three main sections – boost, believe and breakthrough.

Towards the end of the session, we will work on setting up accountability and action plans they have decided to take on during the week based on the discussed agenda.

In between coaching sessions, your son or daughter will work on completing their stated goals. It really is no extra work at all. At times, it could be as small as checking in on a different value or being reminded or a new perspective they have discovered.

How is coaching different from therapy and counselling?
Therapists are medical professionals who analyse their client’s past as a tool for understanding present behaviours and diagnosing psychological illnesses. Coaches, on the other hand, identify issues in the present and help their client develop the tools to overcome or deal with such issues.

As a coach, you are on the same team as your client. This is why coaching is so powerful for young people as they feel respected and create actions plans for themselves. As a coach, I never tell the client what to do, I ask curious questions and help the client develop skills to achieve in any area of their lives.

In other words, coaching focuses on self-exploration, self-knowledge, professional development, performance enhancement, and better self-management. Coaching is future-oriented. Therapists and counsellors on the other hand seek to heal emotional wounds and remove the client’s pain.

What are some of the things coaching can help me with?
Coaching can help with a variety of issues and concerns, including:
  • Improving grades
  • Success at GCSE and A-Level
  • Relationships at home and at school
  • Motivation
  • Getting into your chosen university
  • Dealing with stress and academic pressure
  • Organisation and time management
  • Confidence and leadership skills
  • Health and wellness goals
Does coaching work for everyone?

In some situations, coaching does not work for every student. You have to be willing to change internally; coaching requires commitment and perseverance. Coaching will work if you are ready to make positive changes in your life.

Are you flexible on the number of sessions you offer?

We created the 10-week Student Breakthrough package to give your son/daughter a true head start in life. Completing the whole course is very important to get the most out of the coaching and as a result we don’t offer ‘one off’ sessions unless a client has finished the whole course.
